Fashion Biography

Sophie Theallet, Fashion Designer

Sophie Theallet makes clothes that stand alone in American fashion today. The only path she follows is her own evolution, as each collection is built around Sophie"s unique vision and mastery of craft. Her signature is a blend of femininity, ease, sensuality and craftsmanship that is instantly recognizable and completely different from any other high fashion label. Like Sophie herself, the clothes have a strong French accent, but they also exude a freedom of spirit that transcends all borders. It"s luxury clothing with a sense of meaning. Her talent has been celebrated by the fashion industry on its highest level. In 2009, she won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. Her clothes grace the great style icon Michelle Obama and she enjoys the steadfast support of industry leaders such as Anna Wintour and Cathy Horyn.

Sophie Theallet grew up in the picturesque mountain town Bagneres de Bigorre on France"s South West coast. As the only girl with five older brothers, she was a tomboy but she also dreamt of princesses in beautiful gowns. At 8, she started to imagine and sketch collections. When she reached her teens, Sophie"s fashion influences changed from Cinderella to Vivienne Westwood. During a holiday trip to London she discovered the city"s vibrant Punk Rock scene and fell in love with it. Music and fashion have been intimately connected for her ever since. This is evident in her collaboration with sound designer and composer Henri Scars "Struck. For each runway presentation, Sophie and Henri create a rich, provocative and poetic soundtrack that tells its own story about the collection.

At the young age of 18, Sophie moved to Paris to attend the famous fashion design school Studio Bercot where she received a National Young Designer Award. After school, Sophie chose to work for the most influential designer of the time: Jean Paul Gaultier. She credits Mr. Gaultier for teaching her how to work with colors, develop the narrative of a collection and, most importantly, to trust her own instincts and to be fearless in Fashion. A few years later she moved on to Azzedine Ala•a where she would come to truly mature as a designer. During her 10 years as Ala•a"s right hand woman, Sophie immersed herself completely in the world of couture. She worked on the main collection as well as accessories and knitwear, traveled constantly, absorbed fashion history and perfected her rare fitting and cutting skills.

After moving to New York, Sophie continued to work with Ala•a on a part time basis, while also freelancing for other fashion labels. In 2005 she launched the small and exclusive resort collection Motu Tane. The collection"s beauty, ease and sensuality combined with its rare sense of quality and craft made it one of the most talked about debuts that year. After two successful years with Motu Tane, Sophie felt ready to launch her own label in 2007. Her collection quickly garnered critical acclaim in publications like America Vogue, The New York Times and Time Magazine and was picked up by prestigious luxury stores. Sophie"s designs have an extremely rare quality: they are both unique and universal. Her work is unlike that of any other fashion label, yet it has tremendous appeal to women of all ages. Her devoted clientele loves her talent for making each garment look and feel special. From a simple t shirt to a gala evening gown, Sophie Theallet"s clothes have a sense of effortless perfection that brings out her customers" natural elegance. It is beauty and style from the inside out.
