Born 1965 in Detroit, Michigan, Maurice Malone"s life in fashion took an unexpected course, beginning as a milliner by accident in 1984. He was unable to find a hat he saw on MTV, so decided to make one. Hard Wear by Maurice Malone was created. Four years later, several locations in the Midwest housed his collection consisting of leather coats, knit shirts and pants.
In 1990 Malone decided to move to New York to learn more about the fashion industry. While living in the new city, he discovered the budding hip hop scene and began drawing inspiration from it, coming up with an urban clothing line for men. He attempted to release a line called Label X, but New York proved to be too competitive causing the label to unfortunately fail.
Malone moved back to Detroit and began producing hip hop parties and concerts as a way to finance his fashion ventures. By 1993, he opened Hip Hop Shop a unique retail concept that housed Maurice Malone"s apparel store while also serving as a stage for emerging hip hop stars. Throughout the 1990s, Maurice Malone was seen as a rising star both in fashion and in the rap music scene. Producing mostly jeans during 1993 and 1994, he launched a new line MOJEANS in 1995. Three years later the Council of Fashion Designers of America nominated him for the Perry Ellis Menswear Designer of the Year award. In 1999 Maurice presented both a men"s line and his first ever women"s collection during the same show. The same year he made what was for him the next logical business step, he started a record label, Hostile Takeover Records.
Choosing to focus on his fashion company, Malone launched another women"s line at an exclusive nightclub in Detroit in 2000. This new line, Maurice Malone Designs (MMD,) emphasized style and comfort in women"s sportswear. Maurice Malone today is composed of stylized denim, Mojeans, and a men and women"s designer collection consisting of upscale and elegant separates.
